For over 40 years, Cortland Bookkeeping & Tax Service (now Equus Advisors) has provided individuals and businesses with income tax preparation and planning, accounting management, bookkeeping and payroll services. Our offices are located in the McNeil Building at 17-29 Main Street in downtown Cortland.
The roots of our firm extend back to 1943 when Clarence Green began his accounting practice in the Cortland Savings Bank building. Charles Cook took it over in the late 1950s and sold it to Paul Lorenzo in 1976. Peter VanderWoude, CPA, took over the firm in 2015 and moved the practice from 32 Tompkins Street to his Equus Business Advisors, LLC expanded offices in the McNeil Building. The combined firms are now named Equus Advisors.
Peter began his public accounting career with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) after completing his master’s degree in accounting at Binghamton University and his bachelor’s degree in animal science at Cornell University. He has spent many years in the tax, accounting and finance fields. When Peter started Equus Business Advisors, LLC, he decided to use the name “Equus” which is Latin for horse. Peter was around horses most of his early life on the dairy farm and he continues to enjoy viewing their power, speed and grace. It led to the choice of the flying horse logo to identify the firm.
