Creature Feature – Part of the Family

I’ve never liked the phrase “owning a pet,” because I consider our pets family, rather than merely things we own. Over the decades, my family has had the privilege of sharing our hearts and home with several different animals including dogs, cats, horses, and even a feisty parakeet named Gigi. Each had his or her own distinct personality and unique quirks, just like people do – and each left us with special memories to treasure long after the last goodbye.

Having a pet in the family offers numerous benefits to children. Pets can help foster kids’ social, emotional, and physical development, as well as boost their self-esteem and build social skills and responsibility. They offer faithful companionship, especially to children who are lonely or going through a tough time socially. Perhaps most importantly, loving and caring for a pet can help kids learn compassion and empathy. Parents and guardians play an important role along the way, setting a good example, as the way we treat our animals is likely the way the next generation will care—or fail to care—for theirs.

While Bubbles the goldfish may not require much attention to thrive, others pets, like dogs and cats, depend on us for practically all of their physical and emotional needs. This is a HUGE commitment to be considered seriously before welcoming such animals into our homes. Pets deserve to be kept safe and well-nourished—and just like any other member of the family, to feel included and know they are loved.
