Creature Feature – Fishing Fun

Memorial Day is our official gateway to summer, and it kicks off a season of family, friends, and fun activities. One of America’s favorite summer pastimes is fishing, a sport people of all ages can enjoy. I started fishing as a little squirt and still enjoy it today! If you can, take a kid or two fishing this summer. Fancy gear and tackle aren’t necessary to catch fish and have fun! Then, use the opportunity to lead by example, teaching your junior anglers to respect the resource and to handle fish properly. Also remember that fishing with lead-free tackle helps protect loons, herons, swans, ospreys, and other aquatic birds from deadly lead poisoning. Good stewardship is where it’s at! If you already have some fish-savvy youngsters at home, here’s a fun poem, just for them:
Your Favorite Fish?
Perhaps you like the sunfish best
Because it’s prettier than the rest.
Or maybe it’s those northern pike
With teeth as sharp as chiseled spikes.
And walleye are an awesome fish
When deep-fried and served on a dish.
But don’t forget the smallmouth bass
That tugs and jumps with lots of sass.
Perch are also really cool
Swimming ‘round in a BIG school!
Or maybe bluegills catch your eye
Painted like a sunset sky.
Which fish is tops – your number one?
Try to catch it! Good luck! Have fun!
