Creature Feature – Happy Snake Year?

Yes! For 2025, anyway. The Lunar New Year – which includes the Chinese New Year – begins later this month on January 29th and will usher in the Year of the Snake. Many cultures across Asia celebrate the New Year with exciting festivals. Each year is associated with an animal from the Chinese Zodiac. The snake is the 6th animal within the 12-year cycle and this year’s Sssssuperstar!

When contemplated from a zodiac perspective, snakes offer a plethora of positivity for 2025. Traditionally, some cultures believe the Year of the Snake can be life changing, offering wisdom, calm, creativity and transformation. It is a year ripe for focusing on insight, introspection, and development of one’s inner strength. The Chinese Horoscope values the Snake for keen intelligence and adaptability and associates it with “subtle success and quiet prosperity.”

Despite getting a bum rap from our own culture, snakes are actually highly beneficial to the ecosystem. In turn, they benefit us in various ways, including by keeping rodent and insect populations in check, reducing the spread of Lyme Disease, and contributing to a healthy environment.

Perhaps one of our New Year’s resolutions will be to open our eyes to the value of snakes — and if we can’t quite rally a love for them, some respect will surely Sssssuffice!

Happy New Year!
