Allstate highlights ways for New Yorkers to stay safe and what to do in case of an accident

Staying safe and protecting your investment is something Allstate knows a lot about. Below are some recommendations/tips for fun and safe boating this summer.

These recommendations include:

  • Be considerate of your fellow boaters
  • Let someone know where you’re going and how long you expect to be away
  • Always have a life preserver for everyone on board and one throwable flotation device
  • Carry a working VHF radio that is monitored by U.S. Coast Guard and all maritime law enforcement
  • Have a navigation system such as a GPS and carry a backup paper chart

“While having fun is a priority on the water, these simple tips can help boaters stay safe,” said Allstate New York Spokesperson, Jaclyn Darrohn. “In addition to keeping you safe, there may also be a discount on your boat insurance for completing a boating education course.”

However, even safe boaters unfortunately encounter mishaps on the water. Allstate data shows the most common claims are striking a submerged object and collision with another boat.

Allstate offers a checklist for what to do in case of an accident. Some of these items to follow are:

  • Stay calm
  • Determine the extent of any injuries or damage and, if needed, obtain medical assistance. For legal assistance you can go to Rosemead area personal injury lawyers
  • Call the police to file an accident report
  • Don’t leave the accident scene unless your physical safety is at risk
  • Get the facts and essential details at the scene – (See checklist for full list of accident information essentials)
