July 29-30 – TC3 Residence Life to Hold Yard Sale
Posted by Dustin Horton // July 23, 2011 // Calendar of Events
The Residence Life office at Tompkins Cortland Community College, in conjunction with the Residence Hall Association, is holding a yard sale on campus July 29 and 30. The sale, which will feature items donated by TC3 students who lived on campus, will raise funds to be donated to charity. The sale runs from 9-to-5 on Friday, July 29, and 9-to-3 on Saturday, July 30. It will be held in the atrium inside the TC3 athletics facility.
The sale is called the “R&R for the Earth,” to emphasis the concept of “recycle and reuse.” It is made up of things collected as part of an educational campaign conducted by TC3 Residence Life staff at the end of the semester. The campaign urged students to not throw away usable things, and was successful in collecting enough donations for a yard sale, including televisions, small kitchen appliances, clothing, shoes, and bedding materials. Other items not appropriate for the yard sale have been donated to other organizations, including food that was given to the Dryden Food Pantry.
The sale has been timed to allow incoming students and families to pick up things before heading to college, but it is open to the general public as well. The use of the TC3 athletics facility provides an indoor space, free from any weather concerns, as well as ample parking.
The hope is to make the yard sale an annual event, with money raised at the sale going to a different charity each year. Proceeds from this year’s sale will be donated to the Lakota Nation on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The Nation will split the funds between assisting with the cost of schooling of members and helping offset heating expenses for elders in the tribe.
