April 26 – CCHS Lunch & Learn: “I’ve Lived with the Clockwinder for 40+ Years”
Posted by Dustin Horton // March 26, 2017 // Calendar of Events
12:10pm to 12:50pm, Cortland County Historical Society, 25 Homer Ave., Cortland. Diane Ames will share some history about Cortland’s 1883 Howard Tower Clock which kept folks on Main Street on time until April 11, 2006 when a fire destroyed the Squires Building. Bud (Donald Scott Ames), Diane’s husband, wound the clock weekly from 1971 until the disastrous fire. Diane will share a bit of history about Mr. Squires, the businessman who built the original building where the clock was and about Mr. Charles A. Kellogg, Bud’s immediate clock-winding predecessor. She will also share some of the amusing anecdotes about what it took to be “Cortland’s Clockwinder” for 35 years. Bring your own lunch and we will provide dessert and beverages.
