Freeville Microd Track Owner has been Teaching Kids to Race for 43 Years
The Finger Lakes Microd Club started in the early 80’s a few years after N.Y.S. Microd Associations’ change to Metal frame Microds. During the 1980 season some car owners started to add Suspension to their Microds, mostly because the Metal frame cars didn’t handle as well as the Wood frame Microds that they had just changed from. The cost of building a Microd was quickly escalating and many parents were having trouble affording one. This is when F.L.M.C. Founder A.J. Burgess decided to start a new club based on returning to the original wood frame microds, but with a twist. The new club would own all the motors and a lottery system would be used for picking engines each week. This system along with a rule where the lightest drivers had to weigh-up to the heaviest car – driver combinations, made the racing on the track very close, while keeping it affordable for the parents. These principles have helped keep Flmc viable at a time when other clubs are seeing their numbers decline as the cost of they’re type of racing keeps going up.
Have you always wanted to drive a real Race car? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive door to door with someone? Are you a Girl or Boy between the ages of 5 and 17? Then Little Wheels Speedways might be a place you should visit. We offer Free Try-Outs every spring, and you don’t have to own a Microd to Race with us! The track owner offers season long rentals. The Club is really about parents spending time with their children, (in a beautiful place) improving their driving skills, Sportsmanship, and Helping others. There is a learning curve for the parents as well, putting the motor on, lining up the chain & more. Our club also strives to be inclusive, we welcome & encourage All Special-Needs Kids to Race with Us!” The Club has 5 Microds with Hand controls for Kids in Wheel-Chairs! In addition we have worked with Kids with Hearing Impairment, Asthma, ADHD, Autistic, Spina Bifida, Paralysis, Mentally Challenged, Rasmussen’s Encophalitis, & Bi Polar Disorder. We welcome anyone with special needs that has a desire to try racing. Please give us a chance to help! By now you might be wondering how competitive is the Racing? Well in the 42 years of running the track this way our percentage of Drivers winning a race each year is 89.63%. We will be holding Try-Outs April 19th, 26th & 27th this year.
