What comes to mind when you think of Little York Plantation? Plants?  Beautiful Hanging baskets? Trees? Shrubs? Fruits? Gardening enhancements? Landscaping? Knowledgeable staff?

All of the above but now there’s MORE. The Antique Shop Upstairs in the Barn.

So how does a well-established, successful garden center decide to add an ANTIQUE SHOP?

Ever since we refurbished the 1905 milking barn some 35+ years ago, people have been asking “Can we go upstairs?” The mere question made us cringe.

Why? Because the upstairs of the barn was chocked full of “STUFF”.  “STUFF” represents all the different phases of the business… crates and other remembrances from the original years of as a roadside farm market.  “Stuff” from the years of a floral shop. “STUFF” like trays and pots and baskets that we continued to use each season. Some really good “STUFF” that people had given us over the years. But mostly “STUFF” that no one knew what to do with so we just said “put it Upstairs in the Barn”.

One day it just became too much! We need to use this space. Someone said “Let’s open an Antique Shop! We already have lots of antiques and this space is perfect!” We all thought the idea was crazy but everyone bought in and the cleanout began.

We were on a mission! The “STUFF” that should have taken months to clean out was cleaned out in 8 days. Several staff members were really interested in Antiques but everyone began looking for merchandise to fill the space. The paint on the floor had hardly dried before we had the first section open.

We were finding wonderful pieces to fill the spaces faster than we could get the next areas ready.

One Sunday afternoon we were looking for treasures at an estate sale. The well-traveled lady had impeccable taste and had collected beautiful things from all over the world. It was the last day of the sale and unknown to us the family had no idea of what they were going to do with all the beautiful things left.

We had selected all the items that our budget would allow and were getting ready to check out. One of the family members pulled us aside and asked if we would purchase everything left. There was one stipulation… everything had to be out of the house by 4pm on Tuesday! This was Sunday.

How could we possibly do that?  Many of the items were very fragile and had to be carefully packaged. That would be time-consuming. There were at least 5 loads with our larger landscape trucks. Did we even have enough staff to get that done? And where were we going to unload and display it when we got it back to LYP. We had 15 minutes to make a decision!

We texted everyone on staff that night and asked for their help. By 8AM the next morning, everyone had arrived and the packing began.

Thanks to a dedicated staff, the idea became a reality in less than two months. The Antique Shop Upstairs in the Barn was official!

Stop out today to find your treasure!
