First opened in 1994 by Troy Rodman, the current owner of Bailey’s Karate in Cortland, he was inspired by an Oswegatchie camp. A graduate of Suny Cobleskill, he received training from their Martial Arts Association. Rodman admired the confidence and character that martial arts offered and decided to open up a business to educate all ages. As a result, he also wanted to share the control and discipline behind it. Growing up in Hamilton, New York he set out to expand his clientele to Cortland for its population and local talent, like the Herkimer tournament he witnessed.

Currently, he offers a blend of martial arts that are based on an American sports style. In addition, there is Korean Taekwondo, Japanese Shotokan, as well as kickboxing. Troy has earned his fifth-degree black belt and has been teaching for over thirty years. These classes educate all age groups from five and up. The skills learned to develop both self-defense and safety capability. Then for newly interested people, there are two basic introductory courses to test whether they’re ready and willing to learn. Bailey’s Karate is a private school that provides personal evaluation to receive the best support needed to expand and improve.

Notably, Bailey’s Karate is serving almost fifty students and continues to seek out more individuals excited to learn about the practice. This building is located on the corner of Vanhosen and next to the Cortland community pool. Another thing to mention is that this facility builds on better communication, trust, and respect. Similarly, it teaches students to work together and trust the journey to success. Martial Arts is a physical sport that allows athletes to thrive in physical fitness. Each class is about forty-five minutes long and is divided by age group. These sessions are biweekly, although it can be open to flexibility in schedule. Overall, this place has excellent service and enjoys spreading the teachings of martial arts.
