The Cortland Youth Bureau summer drama program presents a musical within a comedy “The Drowsy Chaperone” with performances at Cortland High School on August 3pm (7pm), 4th (2pm), 9th (7pm) & 10th (7pm). Ticket available at www.purplepass.com/cybdrama.

Hailed by New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical,” The Drowsy Chaperone, with book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, is a parody of the American musical comedy genre of the 1920s. The story concerns a middle-aged, asocial musical theatre fan; as he plays the record of his favorite musical, the (fictional) 1928 hit The Drowsy Chaperone, the show comes to life onstage as he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight. Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another. It is sure to wow audiences of
all ages!
