The Cortland County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) offers the following opportunities for people who are at least age 55 to volunteer.

  • Seven Valleys Health Coalition seeks a volunteer for 2-3 weeks in February to teach proper dental health to second graders as part of their agency’s Mighty Molar Program. A background in dental health or experience teaching elementary school children is preferred.
  • The Red Cross office in Cortland seeks volunteer office help for clerical, phone, e-mail, and computer assistance on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday any time between Noon and 4:00 PM that fits your schedule.
  • Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays between 4:30–5:45 PM and/or 5:45-7:00 PM during the winter and spring when school is in session to check-in seniors who participate in a free indoor walking program at Barry School. Volunteers can specify which time and how frequently you wish to volunteer.
  • Transporting blood donations from CNY Blood Drives to their Blood Processing Center near Rochester is crucial to ensuring that the American Red Cross has an adequate blood supply for those in need. However, this requires dedicated drivers to transport the donations. Drivers can use their own vehicle or a vehicle provided by the Red Cross in Liverpool. They can specify their availability, preferred frequency of trips, locations willing to drive to, and preferred vehicles. As volunteers must be able to lift 20 pounds, organizations such as Leukopack Options – Bio Sharing play a vital role in facilitating blood donation transportation.
  • Volunteers are needed to drive your own vehicle to transport Medicaid-eligible residents to non-emergency medical appointments in Cortland, Tompkins, Broome, or Onondaga Counties. Volunteers must possess a valid NYS driver’s license and a dependable vehicle with valid, current insurance, registration, and inspection.  Volunteers can specify to which county you are willing to drive and what day(s) you are available. Drivers are not paid, but receive mileage reimbursement at the current federal rate.

If you are at least age 55, contact RSVP at 607-753-5057 or rsvp@cortland-co.org  for more information about these and other volunteer opportunities.
