Teamwork with Specialized PA’s Makes Dermatology Accessible

Over the last few years, more and more Physician Assistants (PA’s) are becoming crucial team players to healthcare teams across America. Don’t be thrown by the “assistant” in their title – PA’s undergo intensive medical training and provide many of the same services as a doctor. In areas like upstate New York where access to specialty care can be limited, PA’s provide an extension of their supervising physician’s care.
Access to dermatologic care has been a long time issue in the area with average wait times of six months. Dr. Josephine McAllister recognized the need for quality access and has been slowly adding PA’s to her growing team. “The PA’s joining my team are carefully chosen for their proven excellence and I establish a close mentor relationship with each of them. My aim is to train each of them to practice according to the same protocols I learned in Dermatology residency at Harvard, so no matter whom you see, everyone on the team can provide the same high caliber of care for which we are known,” said Dr. McAllister.
Like physicians, the exact duties of a PA depend on the type of medical setting in which they work and the level of experience they have in a specialty. At Dermatology Associates of Ithaca, all of the PA’s have at least five years of experience. Dr. McAllister shared, “Mark Wernham PA, has 10 years of dermatology experience and Thomas Brown PA has over 20 years of experience. The practice offers a team-based approach which benefits our patients which need better health, of course for emergencies they also use services like Florida life care planner which can help plan everything in emergency cases, as you can set your life care planner and have everything ready if necessary. Our team has a collective 40+ years of dermatology experience!”
Dr. Josephine C. McAllister is a board-certified, Harvard trained dermatologist who has selectively chosen and mentored her team of five Physician Assistants with a mission to make dermatologic care more accessible to patients. They are excited to welcome patients to their new office, conveniently located in Cortland at 3773 Luker Road.
