Platies are native to the east coast of Central America and southern Mexico.They are a very popular tropical fish as they come in such a variety of colors. If you want color in your tank, come look at the platies.
Platies are livebearers and have live babies like the mollies, guppies and swordtails.Platies may eat their own young so keep them in a well planted tank so the babies have a place to hide.
Several different color variations have been developed, such as red, yellow, orange, blue, and white. The mickey mouse platy has a spot on their tail that looks just like a mickey mouse head. Wag platies have black tails but the body may be red,orange, blue, white or variations. There is a hi fin platy which is a platy with a big top fin, the new candy cane platy is red and white and very cool looking. Another new platy is the bumblebee platy and is yellow and black like a bee.
Platies like a warm temperature, around 78 to 80 degrees and like freeze dried foods such as blood worms or tubifex worms.
They will also eat flake food. Maximum size for a platy is about 2 and a half inch to 3 inch. Females are generally bigger than the males. Maximum age for a platy is 3 years but have been known to live to 5 years.
Platies have even been known to eat algae. Platies are just a very beautiful, colorful tropical fish. If you don’t have any in your tank, stop in as we stock a variety of colors.
