Pets a Plenty

Pets A Plenty was opened in 1989. We have had our ups and downs in the last 24 years but most stores will go through that. I see customers that were 5 years old when we opened and now they are 19 years old. It’s unbelievable how time flies. I want to thank all of our customers for helping our store to last this long. Just recently one of my suppliers said that Pets A Plenty is one of the last of the small mom and pop full line pet shops in upstate N.Y. The big Pet Chain Stores do a number on the smaller stores and most do not survive. With your continued support, Pets A Plenty will be able to continue to bring you quality fish and animals to central N.Y.

I would like to point out some of the things that I hear customers say to me and why it is the case.

People are always amazed at how friendly our animals are and the reason is simple, I get most of them from local breeders who tend to play with the animals as they are growing up. This makes the animals more used to being held and comfortable around people. A lot of the big chains ship animals in from big breeders, so they have less contact with people and they may seem more skiddish. I also hear people say that our prices are better than some of the big chain stores.

Many tell me they wish they had come to Pets A Plenty for their pet. Remember a lot of the Chains have higher rent and more employees which can raise the costs of their supplies and animals.

Just recently, I had 3 people on the same day tell me they spent $39.99 on a Guinea pig.

Our price is between $12.99 and $18.99. I had another person tell me they spent $200 on a white chinchilla where our price is $149 to $159  for  white. Right now our gray chinchillas are only $69.99 if you purchase a kit. That is just a few examples of price differences. There are many more.

A lot of people come in with fish problems from the chain stores. Chains sometime ship in 50 to 60 fish per tank. It may look nice but you’ll get healthier fish at a store that stocks fewer fish per tank.

I try to keep no more than 18 to 25 per tank. The fish do much better.

We have 60 tanks of fish and many tanks have 2 species per tank so you’ll have a lot of fish to choose from.

Pets A Plenty carries birds, small animals, reptiles, snakes and tropical as well as goldfish and pond fish. We carry a lot of supplies for all your pet needs. We do not carry dog or cats but we carry a variety of cat and dog products. I take pride in stocking the store with a lot of interesting items. Our hermit crab area is full of neat supplies for your pet crab and we carry small, med. and large hermit crabs, some with painted shells.

I can’t begin to tell you how important it is to shop your family owned stores, and I don’t mean just Pets A Plenty. A lot of our downtown stores are owned by local families.

We can’t pay our bills if you don’t shop with us. Next time you think about shopping at the big chain

store, take a trip to one of the locally owned family shops. You may be pleasantly surprised at the price, quality and knowledge.

I thank you for making Pets a Plenty a success and I hope you will continue to shop with us.
