May 20 – Australian Songbirds, the Music of Nature, and the Nature of Music
Posted by Dustin Horton // May 13, 2013 // Calendar of Events
When: 7:30-9:00 p.m.
Where: Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 159 Sapsucker Woods Road, Ithaca
Speaker: Hollis Taylor, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia
Description: Australian lyrebirds are natures’ greatest mimics. Australian bowerbirds build, paint, and decorate elaborate structures, and they sing and dance. The complex songs of Australian Pied Butcherbirds are considered to be some of the most beautiful in the world. These species prompt questions such as: Is birdsong music? Can birds keep a beat? Do they make art? Join Dr. Taylor as she presents her fascinating field-work results from the Australian outback in stories, photographs, movies, and recordings.
