Cornell Concert Series

Jason Moran and Dave Holland: A Cornell Concert Series Exclusive at Barnes Hall

“… sparklingly intuitive, inventive, spontaneous…unassailably brilliant.”  –DownBeat on Jason Moran
“One of the most versatile bassists in jazz.” – L.A. Times on Dave Holland

For his first appearance at Cornell University in 2006, jazz pianist Jason Moran brought his go-to group, The Bandwagon, to the Statler Auditorium.  He returned to campus two years later with The Big Bandwagon for the multimedia presentation In My Mind at Bailey Hall.  On Saturday evening, January 28, 2012, Mr. Moran will grace yet another Cornell venue.  This time – in the chamber-music intimacy and acoustic warmth of Barnes Hall – the Downbeat magazine coverboy, MacArthur fellow, and now Artistic Advisor for Jazz at the Kennedy Center in D.C., features an extraordinarily special “surprise” guest artist: celebrated bassist Dave Holland joins Jason Moran for a CCS-exclusive 8 pm performance.   [Alicia Hall Moran, originally scheduled for this date, is unable to travel to Ithaca due to her role(s) in the ongoing success of Porgy and Bess.]

A master of tone and rhythm, Dave Holland is now in his fifth decade as a performer and his music possesses a rich and kaleidoscopic history.  The Wolverhampton, England, native got his big break from Miles Davis, with whom he played during the trumpet legend’s epochal Bitches Brew period. In recent seasons, Jason Moran and Dave Holland work together regularly as members of the Overtone Quartet – along with saxophonist Chris Potter and drummer Eric Harland – and both also serve as artists-in-residence at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.  This Ithaca appearance, however, marks a very rare public performance as a simple duo.  Advance purchase of tickets, on-line or through Ticket Center Ithaca, is highly recommended.
