Truxton Snowmobile Club

The Truxton Snowmobile Club, one of the original and oldest clubs in the county, was incorporated in 1972. Early records show 20 to 30 members, with many being families. Activities and interests included hot dog roasts and family rides from a member’s camp on a Sunday afternoon with downhill sledding for the children. As more people began riding snowmobiles, the club saw a need for trail development to assure landowner permission for use of their property. Bridges needed to be built and trails needed to be marked. Because there was no New York State trail Fund at that time the club held pancake breakfasts and raffles to raise money for materials needed. Club dues throughout the 70’s were $1.00. Our trail system was merely farm fields, town roads of which many were posted as routes for snowmobile traffic, or where ever you wanted until someone complained. We had no grooming equipment and a smooth ride was only after a fresh snowfall or snow covered road.

Through out the 80’s and 90’s, with the inception of the New York State Snowmobile Association or NYSSA, fueling for trail improvement, grooming equipment and trail insurance became feasible. Our club now serves the areas of East Homer, Truxton and Cuyler with 70 miles of funded trails. We use 3 Groomer units to keep our trails smooth, have built over a dozen bridges, installed culverts, cleared brush and signed the our part of the trail system. All of this work is done by club members volunteering their time.

We now have an annual membership base of about 150 members. Most members are local riders, but some people join from surrounding areas because they like and enjoy riding our area which usually has good trail conditions. Our current membership dues are $25.00 for individual and $30.00 for a family.

The club has adopted the nickname of Truxton Trail Riders or TTR that we use for advertising and identity. We offer youth safety courses for young riders between ages of 10 and 16 years old. Our club has also helped sponsor a rescue snowmobile operated by the Truxton Fire departed in case of emergencies.

There are two trail head parking areas, one is across from the John J. Mcgraw Field in Truxton, the second is on North Tower Road in Solon near the tower. There are maps available for the Southern Tier trail System and The Central New York Trail System.

We have a club website with currant club activities and trail information, our annual fund raiser is a poker run on the Saturday before Martin Luther King Day in January. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month alternating between the Hiawatha Inn and the Longbranch in Truxton at 7:00pm.
