Do you have the need to clean out a closet, pantry, drawers or a whole room? But lack the desire to get into a mess that you know means having to throw a lot away that has been around for so long that there is mold covering the top of the jar, the moths have eaten holes right through the clothing or the clothes just do not fit anymore? Elderberries help to turn on the spleen which in turn helps one to get rid of the old.

FOLK NAMES: Black berried alter, bour tree, lady ellhorn.

LATIN NAME: Sambuscus nigra.

ELEMENT: Water.

POWERS: Exorcism, protection, healing, prosperity, sleep.

MEDICINAL PARTS: Flower and berry.

CONSTITUTES: Flavonoids, volatile oil, caffeic acid derivatives.

PROPERTIES: Bitter, pungent, cooling, diuretic, alterative, antimucus.

MAGICAL USES: Elder wards off attracts of any form. Hung over doorways and windows, keeps evil from the house. Wearing the elder flowers will also protect one form evil. Grown in the garden protects against lightning for the house.

INTERNAL USES: Flowers are used for very deep sated mucus such as pneumonia. Slows over production of sticky mucus and prevents colonization from virus and bacteria. Berries are used to turn the spleen on, skin complaints and rheumatic pains.

EXTERNAL USES: Flowers are for sore eyes, irritated or inflamed skin, mouth, ulcers or minor injuries.

HARVEST: Pick the flowers when in full bloom in the spring- time and the berries when a dark purple in the fall. Use a fork to gently pull the berries off the stem.

USE AS: Teas, powders, extracts (flowers), syrup (berries).
