Lansing Bottle & Can Does the Dirty Work for You

Lansing Bottle & Can Redemption Center, located at 3106 N. Triphammer Road (Route 34B, kitty corner from Tompkins Trust Company), came under new management in February. Christy Rutan, who started as assistant manager at the redemption center, was promoted to manager within two weeks of her new employment.

Since her promotion, Christy has brought some changes with her to Lansing Bottle & Can. The return on bottles and cans has been raised from 5¢ to 6¢, and there are longer hours, as well: the redemption center is now open from Monday through Friday from 9 am – 6 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am – 4 pm.

While supermarkets and department stores provide self-serve bottle and can return machines for the consumers to use, this can make returning your cans and bottles a huge chore. Christy strongly believes that businesses like Lansing Bottle & Can Redemption Center are a much better deal. Lansing Bottle & Can employs cleaning methods on dirty returns so that you don’t have to spend the time cleaning out your bottles & cans. There are no limits, no pre-sorting is required, and they will even do pickups!

“We are experienced at this,” she said. “We are much faster than the machines, and we don’t care how dirty the returns are. We don’t judge.” Not only this, but redemption centers like Lansing Bottle and Can provide jobs and help the economy. “I refuse to use self-checkouts or self-serve bottle returns,” Christy said. “They eliminate jobs for people who need them.”

Lansing Bottle & Can is also heavily involved in community fundraising. Their long list of fundraisers include those for the SPCA, Suicide Prevention, the Lansing Youth Mission, and the Groton Seniors.

“We keep a calendar,” Christy said. “If someone needs our wagon for a fundraiser, all they have to do is call us up and schedule their fundraiser. We will take our wagon to the site, and when the fundraiser is over, we pick it up and bring it back. We are always open to new fundraisers and helping out our community.”
