Tompkins Cortland Community College students taking the eight-weekSummer Practicum in Sustainable Farming and Local Food Systems class at the Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming are taking part in the second annual “Farm-to-Table Celebration.” The community event will be held at EcoVillage on July 27, and includes a guided tour of West Haven Farm followed by a locally-sourced dinner organized by the students as part of their unique summer class. Tickets are on sale now at www.groundswellcenter.org.

The event is designed as a way to celebrate the seasonal bounty of the Finger Lakes while giving participants a chance to get better acquainted with the principles of sustainable farming.  The Celebration will kick off at 4 p.m. with a reception and educational poster display highlighting the students’ final projects. At 4:30 p.m. the students will lead an educational tour of West Haven Farm, an organic farm located at EcoVillage. The culminating event, a gourmet locally-sourced dinner prepared and served by the students, begins at 6 p.m.

All festivities of the evening will be planned, prepared and presented by students in Groundswell’s TC3 Summer Practicum in Sustainable Farming and Local Food Systems, a college-level intensive for students and community members looking to explore the issues affecting the sustainability of agriculture and food systems. For eight weeks, students have been exploring farming through hands-on work at West Haven Farm, practicing sourcing and preparing local foods in weekly Local Lunch Labs, and studying sustainable food production and distribution models through readings, lectures, discussions, and trips around Ithaca.
