When disaster strikes, the immediate chaos often overshadows the long journey ahead. For many, it’s a struggle not only to find shelter but to secure basic needs, from clothing to meals, as they work to rebuild their lives. PLR Fire Victims Association, a newly launched nonprofit in our community, is committed to helping fire victims through these challenges, providing support that extends far beyond the initial aftermath.

Growing up, I was inspired by my stepfather, a volunteer fire chief who devoted himself wholeheartedly to helping others. His dedication taught me the value of selfless service, a lesson that became all too real on his birthday in 2004, when a house fire upended my life. As a single mother of three boys working two jobs to keep up with their needs, I faced an overwhelming burden, struggling to provide even basic essentials like clothing and food. But after the initial wave of community support, I soon realized the true difficulty of rebuilding my life.

The reality for fire victims is that the journey to recovery often requires more resources and time than most realize. After the flames are extinguished, there’s the challenge of itemizing countless lost belongings, securing temporary shelter, and navigating complex insurance claims.

This experience led me to make a promise: if given the chance, I would create a program to help families like mine through every step of recovery. Now, with the establishment of the PLR Fire Victims Association, we’re bringing that promise to life. As a fledgling nonprofit, we will be committed to offering fire victims immediate relief through essentials like clothing, food, and basic necessities, while guiding them in re-establishing their lives for the long term. We will be working closely with families to address ongoing needs, and we’re building partnerships with local housing and community resources to arrange emergency housing for victims at a moment’s notice.

We invite you to join us for our 1st Annual PLR Christmas Festival on November 24th at the McGraw Community Building, 15 Clinton Street, McGraw, NY, from 9 AM to 4 PM. All proceeds from this event’s raffles and donations will go directly to the PLR Fire Victims Association to support our mission. We are also seeking volunteers, donations of essential items for victims, and community partnerships to strengthen our resources for helping families through their journey to rebuild.
