Six miles outside of Cazenovia, down an enchanting country road, is the location of a co-op style artisan marketplace, known as The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed. On June 2nd, they will be celebrating five years in business.
The Shoppes are family owned and welcoming to many local crafters, artists and patrons alike. From big to small, the Shoppes host over fifty-five vendors in this historic and vast, Central New York location.
The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed is a woman owned business and partners, Florence and Erica Gilmore, along with Patrick Gilmore currently run the establishment.
On the retail side, they offer furniture, antiques, artwork, glass, jewelry, wreaths, candles, soaps & lotion, pottery, steel work, woodwork, lighting, niche, women’s clothing, vinyl records, hypertufa, birdhouses, and other practical home items, as well as locally sourced food items such as honey and maple syrup.
When the store first opened, there were four vendors! Now, almost five years later, there is a waiting list and word of mouth has spread all over New York State and beyond.
Part of the Johnny Appleseed tradition is having good food at an affordable price. Inside the store, The Apple Kitchen, run by Patrick Gilmore and open on weekends, offers just that.
Three different soups are made each weekend, along with signature grilled sandwiches, like the classic Reuben, the rich and cheesy Monte Cristo and pulled pork with coleslaw. Chef Patrick also creates freshly made desserts like apple crisp and carrot cake, along with delicious cookies, brownies and cupcakes.
In October 2018, The Apple Kitchen received their New York State farm wine license, and now offers Orchard Ridge, their own personalized brand of New York State wine, for sale in the glass and by the bottle. Along with wine, The Apple Kitchen also has many choices of New York State beers, available for the discerning connoisseur.
One thing people say after shopping in the store is that they had no idea how big this place is! With 20,000 square feet of space, there is no limit to the items you can discover.
The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed are open year-round, Wednesday through Sunday, and the Apple Kitchen is open weekends, with a sunny view of a pond and rolling hills in the background. Johnny Appleseed is also wheelchair friendly.
