During the cooler seasons many people think they can put their sunscreen away, but it is important to practice sun safety all year round. Even during the winter months, 80% of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation are able to penetrate through the clouds.
From raking the leaves and shoveling snow to winter sport activities, it is important to remember sun damage is cumulative. For those who enjoy hitting the slopes to ski and snowboard, the combination of higher altitude and UV rays reflected by the snow puts these individuals at increased risk of skin damage. The snow reflects up to 80 percent of the UV light from the sun, therefore you are getting exposed to the same rays twice, increasing the risk of damage.
It is always important to be mindful of time spent in the sun, regardless of the season. Enjoy your winter activities, but take care of your skin as you would during the other months of the year to avoid the damage that can occur even during the cooler seasons!
