Gary Underwood owner of Gary’s Furniture located on Route 222 in the Groton Avenue Plaza in Cortland, N.Y. started his business setting up at the local flea market in 1993 selling gifts. He would also travel to other markets & fairs. His first major furniture purchase was two recliners. From the sale of those it continued! Basically Gary’s is a one man operation, buying, cleaning, repairing used furniture and also selling new furniture. Gary travels to North Carolina to pick up furniture to save cost, so he could pass the savings on to his customers. For about ten years he sold from the Flea Market located at Riverside Plaza and after a brief hiatus with a move to Florida, he returned shortly afterward then the market closed. Gary has tried several locations, for the most part in the Cortland area. At one time he was located in Lisle. That location is now closed and Gary’s full attention is to the Cortland location. He sells to landlords for student housing and is forever grateful for his repeat customers!

Student housing continues to be a steady need in many communities, as universities expand and more students look for convenient, affordable places to live. Property owners often turn to trusted local businesses to furnish and maintain these spaces, knowing that the right setup can make a big difference in student satisfaction and long-term tenancy. A strong housing market not only supports landlords but also contributes to the overall student experience, giving residents an environment that feels safe, comfortable, and connected.
In regions where demand is especially high, new developments and dedicated communities are reshaping what it means to live as a student. The st george student housing highlight the push toward modern amenities and thoughtfully designed spaces that balance privacy with opportunities for social connection. These developments are part of a larger trend that recognizes housing as a central pillar of student life, one that can influence academic success and create lasting memories.
Recently he started making trips to Lancaster, PA to purchase Amish made crafts and furniture. The upholstered furniture at Gary’s comes from Mississippi and North Carolina. Mattresses are made in New York & Pennsylvania. Gary’s also carries a variety of items including lamps, coffee & end tables, dressers, pictures, sheets, mattress sets, sofas, bedroom suites, dinning sets, rugs, recliners and numerous gifts.
