Local foods enthusiasts are invited to attend “When Pigs Fly: Flights of New York State Pork, Wines and Beers” to be held on Sunday, November 10th from 3:00-5:00pm at Corks & More Wine Bar, 207 West Buffalo Street on Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca. Admission fees from the event will benefit The Meat Locker Pilot Project at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County.
Admission to “When Pigs Fly…” is $8 in advance or $12 at the door, and includes one free flight of either NY State wine or beer, and one chance on a door prize drawing for sustainably-raised local meat and other prizes. For an additional charge, guests may purchase and sample a ‘flight’ of heritage pork, prepared three ways by The Piggery or their highly regarded pulled-pork sandwich. Alcohol-free admission tickets also are available at lower prices.
From 2:00-3:00pm, before the “pigs fly”, there will be a Pork Butchering Demonstration by Heather Sandford and Brad Marshall, owners of The Piggery, the popular Ithaca butcher shop and charcuterie. The demonstration will cover how to break down a whole pig and will share the stories behind the individual cuts of meat sold at their store and the farmers’ market. Space is limited for the Pork Butchering Demonstration; tickets are $35 per person and include two chances on the door prize drawing. Those who attend the Demonstration are admitted free to “When Pigs Fly…”, however food and alcohol costs are additional.
Tickets for “When Pigs Fly…” and for the butchering demonstration can be purchased online by PayPal or check at: www.fingerlakesmeatproject.
The Meat Locker Pilot is part of The Finger Lakes Meat Project, an effort by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County designed to increase livestock production and “freezer trade” meat sales throughout this region by removing barriers to consumer bulk meat purchases. The Meat Locker Pilot is raising funds to build walk-in freezers at downtown sites in Ithaca and Corning (NY) with units consumers can rent to store bulk meat purchases. The Meat Suite, an online database at meatsuite.com, lists local livestock producers who sell meat in bulk directly to consumers. To learn more about these initiatives, visit: http://www.
