National Llama and Alpaca Day, 2014 with Ken and Brenda Clark
Posted by Dustin Horton // September 20, 2013 // News
Several years ago the last Saturday in September was declared National Llama and Alpaca Day – a day when many alpaca farms spiffy up the barn and throw open the doors to welcome folks in. Here at Tartan Acres in Homer we will host our annual open house. It is a way of introducing interested people to the possibilities of owning (or wearing) alpacas. The barn will be open to the public in order to provide our version of “Alpaca 101”. We will demonstrate several aspects of the care and raising of alpacas, including fiber management, dietary needs, medical care, birthing, and breeding. We will do our best to answer any questions visitors might have and, after 12 years in the alpaca industry and with 56 head of this adorable and easy-to-care for livestock, there’s a good chance we can fill you in on anything you might want to know. Our shop will be open at that time for shoppers of all ages where you can find finger puppets, hats, gloves, mittens, unique hats, scarves, shawls, beautiful sweaters, and cozy blankets. We also have yarn and rovings/raw fiber to keep your spinning wheel busy. So, if you’ve ever thought of owning an alpaca or would just find out more about them, plan on stopping by.
