Using the Whole Animal Workshop for Adults

Friday-Sunday, March 1-3

at 4-H Acres, 418 Lower Creek Road, Ithaca

Join Kfir Mendel of Two Wolves.org for a full hands-on weekend of learning how to honor the animal by utilizing all of it.  Topics include: skinning, butchering, drying & smoking eat, processing & using sinew, making bone tools, using internal organs, and more. Times: Friday 5:30-8:00pm, Saturday 8:30-6:00 pm, Sunday 8:30-4:00pm.  Fee: $125. For adults 18+; youth may attend if accompanied by an adult. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair

Prenatal Nutrition and Breastfeeding – NEW SERIES!

Join other expectant mothers for a 6-session cooking and nutrition education series that meets Mondays from March 4 – April 8.  Share a meal and conversation, then take home recipes and food for after your delivery. “Tending Fires” Film Screening & Panel

Join us for a FREE screening of Tending Fires, a documentary by Peter Ferland.  This film documents a teen rite-of-passage ceremony created for 7 adolescent boys in the Hudson Valley, the multi-generational circle of men who helped to create it, the impact it had on their parents, and the larger cultural issues that surface when a community comes of age. Winter Worm Composting Class

No backyard needed! Vermicomposting is an easy indoor system that produces rich compost for your plants. This hands-on workshop will teach you how to care for your very own bin. Parents Apart
 is a six-hour workshop for parents who want to learn how to help their child(ren) cope during their separation and divorce. Meets 2 Mondays, March 11 & 18, 6:00-9:00 pm.  The workshop is taught by therapists and attorneys and focuses on how children react emotionally to their parents’ divorce and/or separation, and what parents can do to help them adjust.  Registration is confidential and parents of the same child(ren) are placed in different workshops.  Fee: $60-$120, self-determined sliding scale; scholarships are available. 2013 Sister-Friends Celebration

This fun and festive annual luncheon celebrates women of all ages and their relationships. ServSafe Food Safety Basics

This 4-hour class is for food service employees, job seekers, volunteers, and anyone involved in food preparation outside the home. It is based on the ServSafe program of the Natl Restaurant Association, and will cover: the basics of foodborne illness; purchasing, receiving, and storing food; preparing, cooking, and serving; cleaning, and sanitizing. Participants will receive a certificate upon completing this workshop. Fee: $40 per person, includes book and all printed materials. Beautification Brigade Volunteer Training

Garden Apprentice Camp

Help open the Ithaca Children’s Garden for the season, and gain real, hands-on practical gardening skills while you do during this three and a half day camp.  There are many things that happen behind the scenes to plant the garden and keep it healthy and growing all season long. This spring break, join a select group of apprentices to design garden beds, sow seeds, build garden trellises, make signs, stage the Hands-on-Nature Anarchy Zone, and prepare the Farm Stand for opening. This year’s apprentices also will get to help set up for the Tough Turtle 2013 adventure obstacle race! Join us behind the scenes and help bring the 2013 garden to life. There’s no better way to learn than by doing! Animals & Medicine Program

Youth in grades 9 – 12 can explore veterinary medicine through this 6-week,mini-course for those with a sincere interest in biology, medicine and animals.  Each session is taught by a different team of Cornell veterinary students, with guest presentations by veterinary professors.  Individual classes will focus on a different species group of animals, including cats and dogs, horses, ruminants, exotics and wildlife.  Hands-on activities will include practicing a physical exam, discovering the inner workings of the rumen, handling a wide variety of animals, learning about different anatomy, and dissection.

Spring Into Gardening! A Day of Workshops!

This one-day event will feature a range of talks and hands-on workshops on organic vegetable gardening, growing herbs, seed saving, beneficial insects and pests, home fruit growing, deer-proofing your garden, native plants, pruning, school gardening and more! The Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand for soil and pH testing, and the Ithaca Children’s Garden staff will provide a space for children’s gardening activities. Early bird registration (until March 15): $60.00 After March 15 registration: $75.00. ServSafe Food Manager Certification Course

(2) Tuesdays, April 9 & 16, 8:30am-5:30pm

This course offers nationally-recognized certification in food safety.  It is administered through the National Restaurant Association and offered at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County by a certified ServSafe instructor who is also a Cornell Cooperative Extension educator. The course conforms to the New York State Food Handler certification requirements and uses the most recent FDA Food Code updates/standards.   Fee of $175 is due at the time of registration, and includes textbook, all printed materials, certification exam and light refreshments. Course includes 2 sessions, on April 9th and 16th, 2013.  Plan to attend both days.  Questions? Getting Started with Vegetable Gardening
