Scholarships play a crucial role in helping students pursue their educational goals, particularly for those who may face financial challenges. Programs like the Jean M. Coon Humanitarian Award and the Ruth Schaub High School Senior Scholarship provide valuable financial assistance and recognition for outstanding community service and leadership. These opportunities encourage students to engage with their communities and demonstrate their commitment to making a difference. For many, receiving a scholarship can be a transformative experience, allowing them to further their education and achieve their career aspirations.
Unfortunately, some students face significant obstacles on their educational journey, such as homelessness. For these individuals, finding a supportive learning environment is essential. Charter schools often serve as a school for homeless students, offering flexible schedules, individualized support, and a nurturing atmosphere. These schools aim to create a stable foundation for students, ensuring they have access to quality education regardless of their circumstances. By providing resources tailored to their unique needs, charter schools empower homeless students to overcome challenges and work toward a brighter future.
The Ruth Schaub Mature Woman Scholarship of $1000 will be awarded to a Cortland area resident, 21 years or older, studying either full or part-time. Applicants must be continuing their education in an accredited degree granting or certificate training program. The scholarship will be based on demonstrated financial need, community service, and clearly stated educational goals. Applications must be received by Saturday, March 17, 2012.
Applications are available at high school guidance offices, area colleges, Cortland-Madison BOCES, the YMCA, and the YWCA of Cortland. All applications must be sent to the Zonta Scholarship Committee Chair, P.O. Box 683, Cortland, NY 13045.
The Zonta Club of Cortland, chartered in 1973 and affiliated with Zonta International, is a service organization of women in business and the professions. Members raise funds for local and international service projects that improve the lives of women and children. The community is invited to its major fundraisers, the Spring Woman of Achievement Luncheon and the Fall Fashion Show.
