Thoroughly Modern Millie is the zany new 1920’s musical that took Broadway by storm and it’s coming to The State Theatre by way of Running to Places Theatre Company! A high-spirited musical romp that takes place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millietells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz – a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers.   Performances are July 29 – 31 with Friday & Saturday shows at 7pm and a Sunday matinee at 2pm.  Tickets, including group sales, are available at the State Theatre box office at 105 W. State Street, by calling 607-277-8283, or online at www.stateofithaca.com.

The artistic team includes Joey Steinhagen (Director), Gail Belokur (Producer), Todd Peterson (Choreographer), Richard Montgomery (Music Director), David Arsenault (Scenic and Lighting Design) and Michelle Roy (Costume Design).  “This particular group of artists has worked with Running to Places previously, and we are enjoying exploring new levels of artistry for Millie,” explains Belokur.  “David Arsenault’s scenic design represents our most ambitious to date and after the way he beautifully lit our recent production of Romeo and Juliet, we are pleased to bring more of his work to our audiences.  We are also thrilled to work with Michelle Roy again, who designed our costumes for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Hangar Theatre earlier this season.”

The artistry of the actors also promises to match their surroundings.  Resident Choreographer Todd Peterson shares, “The energy and enthusiasm from the first day of rehearsals has been inspirational to me as a choreographer.  Knowing the cast is committed to maintaining the artistic reputation of the theatre company, I feel this is going to be a fantastic performance.”

The play is exclusively sponsored by Purity Ice Cream.  Running to Places also receives season-long support from CSP Management, the Ithaca Youth Bureau, and Cayuga Radio Group as well as grant support from Community Arts Partnership.

R2P connects middle and high school students from across the Tompkins County area, teaching important life skills and strengthening community while creating great theatre. Founded in 2007, they were recently named “Best Community Theatre Company of 2010” by the readers of the Ithaca Times.
