Crown City Rollerz Rolls Out Its Inaugural Season

Cortland’s first flat track roller derby league, the Crown City Rollerz announces its first team, the Royal Pains and rolls out its inaugural season with a bout against the Ithaca League of Women Rollers’ BlueStockings on April 16, 2011 at the JM McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland.

The Crown City Rollerz league formed in April 2010 and began organizing, training, acquiring members, gear, sponsors, and attending charity functions all around the Cortland area. Now a year later, they are proud to announce the theme of their first bout, “Purple Reign.” A portion of the bout proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for Cortland County.  So fans, wear purple to support the Royal Pains as well as honor Relay for Life and their upcoming Paint the Town Purple events April 26 – May 1. Survivors wearing their purple Relay for Life shirts will receive a $5 admission discount at the door.

There will be bleacher and rink side floor seating (bring your own seats) and the Cortland Beer Company’s locally crafted beer will available during the bout in the rink side “lounge” area. Local band GRAIN ELEVATOR plays at half-time, and DJ Dale will be keeping the skaters and crowd pumped up throughout the bout. Doors open at 6 pm and the first whistle blows at 7 pm.  Tickets are $10 for adults and kids aged 12 and under are admitted for free. The season features four home bouts against Ithaca (4/16), Oswego (6/25), Watertown and Scranton (7/16), Scranton (8/6), and three away bouts in Oswego (4/23), Syracuse (8/20) and Ithaca (9/10).

The J.M. McDonald Sports Complex is located at 4292 Fairgrounds Drive in Cortland.

Crown City Rollerz (CCR) is a skater-owned and -operated organization operating a competitive roller derby league out of Cortland, NY. The members of CCR are strong and motivated women who train hard, respect their teammates and love the sport of roller derby as well as community-based philanthropy. Our skaters work to increase their power through discipline, hard work and focus. CCR strives to create a full-contact sport that inspires girls and women and appeals to all of our fans.

We will work to be fully sponsored and financially sound to create our own practice/bout space and fully-funded travel, uniforms, insurance and equipment for CCR skaters. CCR does not endeavor to be a profit-making organization, and hence will work to give any net profits back to the community via donations to charities and non-profit organizations.
