Formidable Jazz Clarinetist & Saxophonist Anat Cohen to Perform at Cornell on 4/1/11

Posted by  //  March 17, 2011  //  News

“The lyric beauty of her tone, the easy fluidity of her technique and the utterly extroverted manner of her delivery – with the clarinetist practically dancing as she played – made this music wholly accessible to all.”
– Chicago Tribune

Modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, Afro-Cuban styles –  jazz clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen is at home with them all.  A diverse composer and genre-crossing bandleader, Anat Cohen has been hailed by American critics as a bold voice for jazz in the 21st century.  Born in Tel Aviv, Anat is widely considered one of the best among Israel’s many jazz exports to the United States.  On Friday, April 1 at 8:00pm, Cornell Concert Series presents Anat Cohen Quartet (with Anat on saxophone and clarinet, guitarist Gilad Hekselman, bassist Joe Martin, and drummer Marcus Gilmore), performing at Cornell University’s Bailey Hall.

Ms. Cohen began playing clarinet at 12 and saxophone at 16, where she majored in jazz at the prestigious Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts. After graduation, she served in the military from 1993-1995, playing tenor saxophone in the Israeli Air Force Band. Anat came to the States in 1996 as a scholarship student at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and arrived in New York City in 1999, where she has since been recognized in a flurry of awards and distinctions, including four consecutive Jazz Journalists Association “Clarinet Player of the Year” awards and multiple “Rising Star Clarinet” DownBeat critic’s polls.

Anat Cohen’s latest album, Clarinetwork – Live at the Village Vanguard, inspired by Benny Goodman and celebrating his centennial in 2010, is a musical tour-de-force that returns the clarinet to its rightful role at the forefront of jazz. Ira Gitler, noted jazz historian and journalist, says of Ms. Cohen: “She is formidable. Long may she continue to enrich the music in myriad ways.”
