The changing of the seasons offers us the opportunity to start fresh. However, with the kids back-to-school, and the holiday season just on the horizon, to-do lists quickly fill up. Before it’s time to unpack your winter coat, make sure you complete one serious activity: an insurance checkup.

Life insurance is particularly important if you have a spouse and/or children who depend on you. It can protect you and your family in many ways. Most obviously, the policy’s death benefit can help cover unpaid medical bills or replace your income, providing financial assistance during difficult times. Some life insurance products are employed as part of an estate plan, to accumulate savings, as a source of retirement income, or to pay estate taxes.

An annual life insurance checkup enables you to double-check that the amount and type of coverage is right for your current situation. Many people don’t think about life insurance until the birth of their first child, but other life events should trigger a change in coverage. For example, you may need more coverage when you marry, divorce, have additional children or plan to start a business. And, of course, you may want less coverage on the happy day when your youngest child leaves the nest.

As the Regional Financial Sales Leader for Allstate Insurance in New York, I’ve helped many members of our community protect their financial well-being. Our Allstate agents and financial specialists’ missions in Cortland have been clear: support community initiatives, offer superior customer service and deliver the highest quality of products and services. Before meeting with our team, I encourage you to spend a few minutes online. Resources like Allstate.com and other financial or investment websites offer a wealth of information, from defining the types of insurance (term, permanent) to providing an online calculator that shows how you might customize your policy based on your needs, expenses and assets.
